HMS Lancaster departing Portsmouth harbour, with a heavy sky overhead.

Duke-class Type 23 Frigate
HMS Lancaster (F229), was built by Yarrow Shipbuilders and launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on 24 May 1990. The ship is referred to as ‘The Queen’s Frigate’, as the Duke of Lancaster is another title for the Sovereign.
Lancaster was commissioned into Royal Navy service on 1 May 1992, as the third ship in the class. She's had a full and eventful career of 29 years thus far, entering into a life extension refit (LIFEX) at HMNB Devonport in 2017 until 2019, which included fitting of the Artisan 3D radar, Sea Ceptor anti-air missiles and strengthening the backbone of the ship.
She arrived back at her homeport of Portsmouth, in December 2019; returning to operations in July 2020. The painting, commissioned by the ship, shows her departing Portsmouth harbour, no doubt bound for more adventure.
