Duke-class Type 23 Frigate
HMS MONMOUTH (F235) a Type 23 Duke class frigate built by Yarrow Shipbuilders and launched 23 November 1991 by Lady Eaton and commissioned 24 September 1993. She is the sixth Royal Navy ship to bear the name. In 1995 she was the first RN ship to visit New Zealand in 10 years following the ANZUS dispute. In 2007 she circumnavigated the globe and after a refit HMS Monmouth deployed to the Persian Gulf in 2009. During 2011 she was engaged in anti-piracy patrols off Somalia and independence celebrations in the Seychelles. She is 436ft 4 in long and a displacement of 4,900 tonnes. Her nickname is 'The Black Duke' The painting was commissioned by a former commanding officer.
