Sheffield-class Type 42 Batch 3 Destroyer
HMS Gloucester (D96) a Batch 3 Type 42 destroyer built by Vosper Thorneycroft at Southampton and launched on the 2 November 1982 by the Duchess of Gloucester. She is the 10th ship to bear the name in the Royal Navy. Her operational career saw active service in the Gulf war 1991. She received her nickname of 'The Fighting G', from the former Light Cruiser of World War 2. During the Israel-Lebanon conflict of 2006, she evacuated British nationals from Beirut, making 3 such trips with evacuees to Cyprus. She was 462ft 7in long with a top speed of 30 knots and a displacement of 5,200 tons. She was decommissioned on 30 June 2011.
