Hunt-class Mine Countermeasures Vessel
HMS Atherstone was built by Vosper Thornycroft, at Woolston, Southampton launched on 1 March 1986 by Mrs Amy Jarvis and commissioned on 17 January 1987. Deployed on 31 May 2012 to the Arabian Gulf, based in Bahrain, for three years. In 2014, she wore the 'MCM9’ Squadron badge used in the Gulf from when the Royal Navy had an MCM Squadron during the middle of the last century, based in HMS Juffair. The Hunt-class were the largest warships to be constructed from glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and of the thirteen vessels commissioned only six remain in service with the Royal Navy, as the MCM2 Flotilla based at Portsmouth. HMS ATHESTONE decommissioned on 17th December 2017.
